Airports Authority Metropolitan Washington
To acquire National and Dulles airports with the concurrence of the Mayor and council; to operate, maintain, improve, promote and protect the airports for public purposes. Adopt and amend by laws and regulations; appoint advisory committees; issue and refund revenue bonds; borrow money; fix and collect fees: acquire and dispose of real and personal property; hire employees and agents; sue and be sued; construct or permit construction of appropriate facilities; enter into contracts; receive payments, appropriations, grants, gifts, loans, advances and other funds; establish a foreign trade zone; exercise the right of eminent domain in Virginia; and prepare an annual audit. Members are not personally liable. DC members must file personal financial statements. Consists of 13 members: three appointed by the Mayor with advice and consent of the Council, five appointed by the Governor of Virginia, two by the Governor of Maryland, and three by the US President. Members may not hold elective or appointed public office. All members except the Presidential appointee are required to live in the Washington Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area. A chairperson and other officers are elected annually.
